According to multiple media reports, six players are expected to attract the highest spending from IPL franchises. This list includes two former stars of Kolkata Knight Riders.

1. Cameron Green (Australia)
The all-rounder, dropped by Royal Challengers Bangalore, is likely to see intense bidding in the 2026 auction. Due to his batting and bowling skills, teams like Kolkata Knight Riders, Chennai Super Kings, and Punjab Kings could spend around ₹15 crore to secure him.

2. Matheesha Pathirana (Sri Lanka)
This 22-year-old pacer has been a significant influence for Sri Lanka. After being released by Chennai Super Kings, IPL teams may compete heavily to acquire him. Experts predict his price could go over ₹15 crore.

3. Wanindu Hasaranga (Sri Lanka)
The spin all-rounder, left out of the retention list, is expected to attract bids from almost all major IPL teams. Kolkata Knight Riders could also be in the running to sign him.

4. Ravi Bishnoi (India)
The 25-year-old star spinner, released by Lucknow Super Giants, is highly sought after due to his exceptional bowling abilities. However, Lucknow will not retain him.

5. Shreyas Iyer (India)
The batsman, dropped from Kolkata Knight Riders’ retention list, was valued at ₹23.75 crore. Due to poor performance, he no longer has a place in KKR. Nevertheless, IPL teams could spend a hefty amount to buy him in the auction. If KKR re-signs him at the last moment, it would be a huge surprise.

6. Andre Russell (Caribbean)
After 11 years, this finisher has been released by KKR. While Kolkata is not looking to retain him, teams like Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Punjab Kings could bid big for him in the auction.

Watson, who enjoyed a highly successful IPL career with Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings, will now take up a key role in KKR’s coaching setup. His appointment comes soon after the franchise named Abhishek Nayar as head coach. The two will work together as KKR aim to bounce back stronger after finishing eighth last season.

The Queensland-born cricketer represented Australia in 59 Tests, 190 ODIs, and 58 T20Is. In the IPL, Watson played for over 12 seasons, scoring four centuries and winning the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award twice — in 2008 (when Rajasthan Royals won the inaugural title) and again in 2013.

After retiring, he transitioned into coaching, serving as an assistant coach with Delhi Capitals under Ricky Ponting and most recently coaching the San Francisco Unicorns in Major League Cricket (USA). Now, his next stop is Eden Gardens, as part of KKR’s leadership group.

KKR Wants a Fresh Start After a Disappointing Season

KKR had a disappointing 18th IPL season. Even after appointing Ajinkya Rahane as captain, the team could not meet expectations, finishing last in the points table. Analysts believe the team struggled to adapt to Rahane’s leadership and strategies. Now, KKR management is looking to start fresh and restructure the team for a stronger comeback.

Key Retentions

According to reports from CricBuzz and SportsYear, KKR plans to retain its mainstays, Andre Russell and Sunil Narine. The management has no plans to release the two Caribbean stars, who have been pillars of KKR’s success for years and remain central to the team’s strategy for the new season.

Other Likely Retentions

Sources suggest that, in addition to Russell and Narine, the following players may also feature in KKR’s retention list:

Varun Chakravarthy, Rinku Singh, Harshit Rana, Ramandeep Singh, Angkrish Raghuwanshi, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Rovman Powell, Vaibhav Arora, Spencer Johnson, Mayank Markande, Ajinkya Rahane

However, there is some uncertainty about whether Rahane will continue as captain. While he may remain in the squad, his leadership role could be reassessed.

Players Likely to Be Released

On the other hand, KKR may release a few big-name players before IPL 2026 to free up budget for the auction. Players reportedly at risk of being released include:

Venkatesh Iyer (₹23.75 crore), Moeen Ali, Quinton de Kock, Heinrich Klaasen, Anukul Roy

KKR management wants to retain flexibility in the budget to rebuild the squad strategically.

Budget Ahead of Auction

Reports suggest KKR will have a total budget of around ₹125 crore for the auction. After the retention period, the team may have ₹53–58 crore left to spend on new players. Combining the experience of Russell and Narine with the youth of Rinku Singh and Varun Chakravarthy, KKR aims to build a stronger, balanced team ahead of IPL 2026.

1. Luke Wood

Left-arm pacer Luke Wood could be a smart signing for KKR in IPL 2026, particularly as a replacement for Spencer Johnson, who failed to impress last season. Wood’s ability to swing the ball both ways — especially back into right-handers — adds much-needed variety to any pace attack.

The English quick has picked up over 210 wickets in 199 T20 matches at an economy rate of 8.42, showcasing his consistency across global leagues such as the PSL, ILT20, and BBL. Having also featured for Mumbai Indians in the 2024 IPL, Wood brings both experience and adaptability to Indian conditions.

2. Tom Banton

Explosive wicketkeeper-batter Tom Banton could be another potential target for KKR. Known for his aggressive batting and ability to handle spin, Banton has been in good form since 2024, scoring over 4,700 T20 runs at a strike rate of 143.74.

With KKR likely to part ways with Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Quinton de Kock, Banton offers a dual option as a top-order batter and wicketkeeper. Interestingly, he has been part of the KKR setup before — during the 2020–21 seasons — and could be primed for a comeback in 2026.

3. Prithvi Shaw

After missing out in the 2025 auction, Prithvi Shaw has rediscovered his form in domestic cricket, scoring centuries in both the Buchi Babu Tournament and other domestic fixtures. The 25-year-old’s aggressive approach at the top could solve KKR’s long-standing opening woes.

With Rahane’s captaincy future uncertain and both openers struggling last season, Shaw could be a fresh start for KKR’s top order. Having already scored 1,892 IPL runs at a strike rate of over 147, Shaw could be a value pick to rebuild the team’s Indian batting core.

4. Cameron Green

As KKR look to the future beyond Andre Russell, Australian all-rounder Cameron Green could emerge as a major target at the 2026 auction. Green offers balance with his big-hitting ability and handy pace bowling — qualities that mirror what Russell has provided over the years.

The franchise could free up around ₹30 crore by releasing high-value contracts like Venkatesh Iyer and Anrich Nortje, giving them the financial flexibility to pursue Green aggressively. With 707 runs and 16 wickets in 29 IPL matches for RCB and MI, Green is already a proven performer in Indian conditions.

Shami joined Hyderabad in the 2025 mega auction for ₹10 crore. However, that season turned out to be a disappointing one for him, as injuries and inconsistent form plagued his campaign. He played only 9 matches, taking 6 wickets at an economy rate of 11.23 — far below his usual standards.

Despite that, the SRH management has chosen to stand by him. They reportedly believe that Shami can regain his rhythm and perform like the match-winner he once was.

According to team sources, captain Pat Cummins and the support staff made it clear that Shami’s presence in the dressing room is invaluable. “His experience and leadership qualities are an inspiration for the younger bowlers,” said an SRH official.

The team already has other Indian pacers like Harshal Patel and Jaydev Unadkat, but Shami’s experience and skill with the new ball still make him indispensable.

While 2025 was a forgettable year for Shami, 2024 told a completely different story. That year, he won the Purple Cap with 28 wickets, marking one of the best seasons of his IPL career. SRH remains hopeful that, based on his recent performances in domestic cricket and his strong Ranji Trophy comeback, they will see the old Shami return in the next season.

So far, Shami has played 119 IPL matches, taking 133 wickets — a testament to his consistency and longevity. However, at 36 years old, his injury concerns and fluctuating form continue to pose challenges for Hyderabad. Still, SRH’s faith in experience over short-term form might just pay off this time.
