Play was interrupted by bad light on the first day. Bengal resumed Day 2 from 171/1, with Shakir and Sudip steadily building the innings. Shakir, however, fell for 95, just five runs short of a well-deserved century. At the other end, Sudip remained composed, bringing up a fine 108 off 250 balls, studded with 15 boundaries.

But once Sudip departed, Bengal’s batting collapsed. Veteran Anustup Majumdar (6), skipper Abhishek Porel (11), and Sumanta Gupta (5) fell cheaply, leaving Bengal struggling at 262/6.

Shahbaz Ahmed and Rahul Prasad then steadied the innings, adding 61 runs for the seventh wicket. Rahul scored 35, while Shahbaz continued to fight alone as wickets tumbled at the other end — Kaif went for a duck, and Shami for just 5.

Rain forced an early end to play, leaving Bengal on 336/9. For Tripura, Rana Dutta claimed three wickets, while Bikramkumar Das and Manishankar Murasingh took two apiece. Abhijit Sarkar and Swapnil Singh shared the remaining two.

After such a promising start, the collapse has left Bengal’s dressing room tense. With rain still a threat, Tripura will aim to grab the last wicket quickly and make a solid start with the bat on Day 3. Meanwhile, Bengal will hope Shahbaz can add a few more crucial runs to their total.

In the latest ICC rankings, Rohit leads with 781 points. Gill dropped to third place, while Afghanistan’s Ibrahim Zadran claimed the second spot with 764 points. Rohit’s performance in Australia also saw him gain 36 rating points, moving from 741 to 781, which was enough to displace Shubman Gill from the top. Gill, who had been the No. 1 batter since late 2023, slipped to third, with Zadran taking the second position. Despite Virat Kohli’s unbeaten 74 in the final ODI, he dropped one place to sixth, while Shreyas Iyer rose to ninth.

This resurgence is especially remarkable given Rohit’s previous career-high of No. 2 during the 2019 World Cup, where he had amassed five centuries and reached a peak rating of 882 points. His recent tour of Australia added multiple new records to his illustrious career. He surpassed Virender Sehwag’s tally of 15,758 runs across formats as an Indian opener, achieving it in 11 fewer innings. He also equaled Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 45 international hundreds as an opener, second only to David Warner globally, and matched Tendulkar’s nine ODI centuries against Australia, though in just 49 innings compared to Tendulkar’s 70.

Additionally, his century in Sydney made him the second-oldest Indian to score an ODI hundred, behind Tendulkar, and extended his tally to 14 hundreds in SENA countries — the highest by any visiting batter in those conditions.

But this time, the old SKY seemed to be back. He began cautiously, scoring only 12 runs off his first 10 balls, before switching gears. The trademark aggression returned — elegant cover drives, fierce square cuts, and powerful pulls all flowed freely. During this innings, Suryakumar also reached the milestone of 150 sixes in international T20 cricket. He remained unbeaten on 39 off 24 balls when rain stopped play.

At the other end, Shubman Gill provided solid support, scoring 37 off 20 balls, including four boundaries and one six. The duo built an 85-run partnership in 9.4 overs before the rain returned — this time for good. Despite the ground staff’s best efforts, play could not resume, and the match was officially abandoned.

Even though the game was washed out, the biggest takeaway for India was undoubtedly Suryakumar Yadav’s return to form. He silenced critics with his composed yet explosive batting display. The team’s coaches and support staff were visibly pleased. With two matches remaining in the series, SKY’s regained confidence is expected to boost India’s momentum.

Australia, too, found positives in the match — particularly their pacers’ sharp spells and the young fielders’ athleticism.

Had it not been for the rain, the contest promised to be a thrilling one. Still, amid the dark clouds over Canberra, India found a bright ray of light — Suryakumar Yadav’s resurgence, a hopeful sign for the games to come.

He is still recovering from a left quadriceps injury sustained during the second ODI in Adelaide and recently experienced neck spasms, which have affected his mobility.
